City Offers Guide to "Caring for Your Historic Home"

The Office of Historic Resources and Department of City Planning have created a handy, award-winning publication that offers property owners guidance on how to care for a historic home.

To download a copy, click on the attachment at the bottom of this page.  The guide and an accompanying brochure summarizing the City's Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ) program are also available on page in the HPOZ section of the web site.

The guide provides clear, illustrated "do's and don'ts" for common historic rehabilitation work, addressing wood siding; stucco and masonry; paint; windows; doors; roofs and chimneys; porches and balconies; fences and gates; and landscaping and hardscape.  The publication also contains a handy summary of Los Angeles' architectural styles, a list of preservation resources, and summary of financial incentives for historic preservation.

The guide is a centerpiece of the City's Historic Homeowner Education Program, which has won awards from the Los Angeles Conservancy, American Planning Association (Los Angeles and California chapters), and the State of California's Governor's Historic Preservation Award.
